Cinder & Seams Studio offers hand-guided edge to edge longarm quilting. That means the machine does not have robotics and I am driving it using a design and a laser to “trace” and stitch the design onto your quilt. I do not offer custom quilting at this time. How much do you charge to quilt?

While there are a lot of things that go in to completing a quilt top, the charge for actually stitching the design is .02/square inch. You can figure this out by multiplying the width x length of your quilt and then multiplying the result by .02. Example: Quilt top is 72 inches x 80 inches. 72 × 80=5,760. Then take 5,760 x .02=$115.20. That is the cost of the quilting. Each quilt is also charged an $8.00 thread fee.

Additional charges to consider may include: Batting (if not provided), backing fabric (if not provided), new pantograph design charge (50% of the cost which is usually around $7-8), and miscellaneous charges if extra work is needed to prepare or make your quilt top ready for quilting. All miscellaneous charges would be discussed prior to proceeding with the job.

What do you need from me to complete my quilt?

Your completed quilt top. Double check to make sure all seams are intact. Seams should be pressed to your preference. Excessive threads on the the top (and if dark threads on the back will show through) should be trimmed. Neatly fold the top.
Batting. You may provide your own batting (the middle fluffy stuff!) or I can provide at an additional charge. I have unbleached thin cotton batting available in stock for $10.80/yd and I can also order a variety of batting types and sizes from Quilter’s Dream. Ordering a special batting may increase the completion time. Batting should be larger than your top by 4 inches on each side. If you add 8 inches to your width and length measurement of your top, you will be good to go!
Backing fabric. This should be at least the same size as the batting (extra 4 inches on all sides) but can be larger. If you are not using a wideback, and need to piece your fabric, a horizontal seam is preferred over a vertical, but sometimes cannot be avoided. We can discuss if this causes a problem.

What else do I have to do?

Now you will need to choose a pantograph design and thread color. Sometimes, you want the thread to blend and be in the background and other times you want that quilting to stand out! If you are stumped, I am ready to make suggestions and help you figure it out.

The design you choose may be for texture or you want it complement the theme of the quilt. Whatever you decide, your quilt is going to be gorgeous and loved! If you aren’t sure what may look good, I am also willing to make suggestions based on your preferences. It’s ok to ask for help and also ok to poo poo a suggestion. You are not going to hurt my feelings!

How long will it take to get my finished quilt top back?

Upon submitting your quilt top to Cinder & Seams, you will be told an estimate on return. Currently, my turn around time is between 1-2 weeks. Once completed, I typically text pictures of the completed top to you directly and arrange pick up or shipping home. Your quilt will be returned to you folded along with any materials trimmed from the sides (extra batting and fabric). I trim each quilt at the edge of the top unless otherwise specified. If you don’t want the extra batting and fabric returned (believe it or not, some people don’t!) that is ok too, just let me know.
